Rain Alert: Heavy Downpour Hits Mumbai and Surrounding Areas, Red Alert Issued
The onset of monsoon has brought heavy rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra, with Mumbai and surrounding districts witnessing intense showers since early morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai for the next three hours, cautioning residents to remain vigilant and avoid non-essential travel.
Mumbai Lashed by Heavy Showers
Clouds blanketed the city skies early Saturday, followed by relentless rain in areas including South Mumbai, Dadar, Parel, and Worli. Localized flooding has been reported in several low-lying areas, and waterlogging has disrupted traffic in multiple parts of the city. In its latest bulletin, the IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in South Mumbai for the next few hours. Neighboring districts like Thane and Palghar are also experiencing steady and intense rainfall, prompting weather officials to closely monitor the situation.
Hinjewadi Turns into a ‘Water Park’
In Pune district, Hinjewadi IT Park in Pimpri-Chinchwad faced severe flooding following a sharp spell of heavy rain earlier this morning. Within minutes, roads in the area were submerged, turning the tech hub into what many on social media are calling a “Water Park Hinjewadi.” Several two-wheelers were reportedly swept away by the water currents in parts of the area. The flooding has raised serious concerns about the lack of adequate pre-monsoon drainage preparation. Locals blame poor maintenance and insufficient cleaning of stormwater drains for the situation, which has severely impacted daily commuters and IT professionals working in the region.
Authorities Urge Caution
With red and orange alerts issued across various districts, the IMD and local authorities have urged citizens to avoid venturing out unless necessary. Emergency services are on standby, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated disaster response teams to handle any weather-related emergencies.
