Mumbai Surpasses Delhi in Pollution, Shocking Information Revealed
The Mumbai High Court has expressed strong displeasure over the increasing air pollution and dangerous conditions at construction sites in Mumbai. The court has warned that if the municipal corporation and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board do not take concrete steps to curb pollution, Mumbai may also face a serious situation like Delhi.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Mr. Chandrashekhar criticized the inaction of the officials in strong words. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and senior officials of the Pollution Control Board have been ordered to appear in court again on Wednesday, and detailed information has been requested on the exact measures taken to prevent air pollution.
The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai and surrounding areas. The hearing on this petition took place on Tuesday. During this time, the judges stated that once the situation goes out of control, nothing can be done, as we have seen in Delhi in recent years. They firmly noted that it is everyone's responsibility, both as citizens and as a court, to protect the environment.
During the hearing, the court also raised questions about the health of construction workers. Officials were asked to provide answers on what immediate measures were taken for workers who come into direct contact with dust and pollution.
It was informed in court that out of the 1,080 sensors installed to monitor air quality, about 220 sensors are not operational. The court expressed strong displeasure, stating in clear terms that if officials do not become alert until the court orders, then such systems are of no use. Additionally, the court observed that many construction sites lack necessary safety equipment. It was found that work is ongoing without installing sheets or green nets to prevent dust. Officials stated that since November, notices have been sent to 433 construction sites, and orders to stop work have been issued at 148 of them.
