Mumbai Train Collision: Minister Orders Probe, Offers Free Treatment to Injured
State Minister Girish Mahajan has termed the tragic accident between two local trains near Mumbra station as a "very unfortunate incident." The mishap, which occurred on Monday morning, claimed the lives of four passengers and left ten others injured. The Maharashtra government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured free medical treatment for all injured victims.
During his visit to the accident site, Minister Mahajan said, “Two local trains came face to face on a curve near Mumbra station. Some passengers were hanging on the footboards, and due to the narrow gap and friction between the passing trains, four people died and others sustained injuries.”
Free Treatment for the Injured
Mahajan confirmed that the injured passengers were promptly shifted to hospitals for medical care. “Two critically injured persons are being treated at Jupiter Hospital. Necessary tests like CT scans and MRIs have been conducted. Surgeries will be performed if required. The state government will cover all medical expenses,” he stated.
Ex-Gratia Compensation Announced
The state government has also declared financial assistance for the victims. Families of the deceased will receive ₹5 lakh each. Meanwhile, the injured will be compensated between ₹50,000 and ₹2 lakh, depending on the severity of their injuries.
CM Monitoring the Situation
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis are reportedly monitoring the developments closely. “The Chief Minister is in constant touch with the Railway Ministry and has ordered an immediate on-site investigation. He personally directed me to visit the location despite my travel schedule,” Mahajan added.
Concerns Over Overcrowding and Delays
The incident has once again raised concerns about chronic overcrowding and delays on Mumbai’s Central Railway line. Many commuters have pointed out that persistent train delays contribute to increased congestion, heightening the risk of such accidents.
“There’s an urgent need for long-term safety measures to ensure such tragedies do not recur,” Mahajan acknowledged.
High-Level Inquiry Underway
A high-level inquiry has been launched to investigate the accident. Senior technical officers from the railway department have reached the site and begun their assessment. Mahajan expressed confidence that the government would take stringent steps based on the findings of the inquiry to improve rail safety.
