The process of obtaining educational loans for OBC (Other Backward Classes) students in the state has now become easier. The Maharashtra government has made an important decision to remove the condition of an annual income limit of up to 8 lakh rupees required for educational loans. Now, students can avail of educational loans based solely on the non-creamy layer certificate.

Under the interest rebate scheme implemented by the Maharashtra State Other Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation, the corporation will refund the interest on approved loans up to 10 lakh rupees (for education in India) and up to 20 lakh rupees (for courses abroad) for state, domestic, and international courses.

Previously, it was mandatory for the applicant's family annual income to be within 8 lakh rupees for this scheme. However, this condition has now been removed, and only those with non-creamy layer status can avail of the scheme. The official government resolution (G.R.) making this amendment was announced on July 31, 2025.

Students become eligible to benefit from this scheme once their loan is approved by the bank. The corporation reimburses up to 12 percent interest to applicants who regularly repay installments. Sachin Rajurkar, Secretary General, National OBC Federation, welcomed this decision as a positive change. He stated that this decision will also provide significant relief to the children of OBC parents working in government service classes 2, 3, and 4.
