The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as Rani Baug in Byculla, Mumbai, has become an attraction due to its diverse animals. The main features here are the tigers and penguins, along with other animals. People come from far and wide to see these animals. However, there is important news for Mumbaikars visiting Rani Baug for the penguins.

In the coming new year, the penguin enclosure will be closed for a full two months. Currently, this enclosure has an area of 1,800 square feet, which will now be expanded by 800 square feet. The penguin section here has the capacity to house 25 penguins, and currently, there are 21 penguins. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation will expand the space for the penguins, allowing for 10 to 15 more penguins to be housed in the future.

Currently, due to the expansion of the area, the penguins will be temporarily moved to their quarantine section. Meanwhile, the exhibition will remain closed until the work is completed, which is approximately two months. This expansion is part of the new aquarium project currently under construction. The penguin enclosure currently has systems to maintain coolness, water purification systems, 24-hour CCTV cameras, as well as facilities for doctors, animal caretakers, and engineers.

On July 26, 2016, 3 male and 5 female penguins were brought to Mumbai from Seoul, South Korea for the first time. According to municipal officials, “This expansion will provide the penguins with more space, safety, and a comfortable environment. The combination of the new aquarium and the penguin section will make the tourist experience more attractive.”
