Possibility of District Council Elections Being Held in Two Phases?
(Z P Elections) The State Election Commission is considering holding the Zilla Parishad elections in two phases. This decision may be taken due to the issue of the 50% reservation limit. Initially, voting is likely to take place in 15 Zilla Parishads, while elections for the remaining 17 Zilla Parishads will be held in the second phase after the Supreme Court hearing on January 21.
The state is in the midst of municipal council and municipal panchayat elections. On December 20, voting will take place for the remaining municipal council and municipal panchayat elections. Immediately after that, on December 21, the results will be announced. While the entire state is focused on these results, big news is now emerging regarding the district council elections in the state. It is being said that the State Election Commission is preparing to hold the district council elections in two phases. Intense preparations for this are underway in the Election Commission. If the district council elections are held in two phases, leaders from all parties will get a longer period for campaigning. Therefore, it is being predicted that these elections may become more competitive.
The Supreme Court has recently given an important decision regarding local self-government elections. This time, the court had stated that in any upcoming election, the 50 percent limit should not be exceeded. Therefore, sources have said that to plan accordingly, the Election Commission has started considering holding the district council elections in two phases. In places where the 50 percent reservation limit has been exceeded, sources have said that the State Election Commission is considering holding the district council elections there in the second phase.
Elections to 15 district councils to be held
The Supreme Court will hear the matter on January 21 regarding the issue of exceeding the 50 percent reservation limit in local self-government elections. Out of the 32 district councils in the state, the 50 percent reservation limit has been exceeded in 17 district councils. Therefore, excluding those 17 district councils, the State Election Commission is preparing to hold elections for the remaining 15 district councils in the first phase.
If there is no obstacle…
Since there is no obstacle in the context of municipal corporation elections and the Supreme Court has also not given any directions in this regard, the State Election Commission is moving towards holding municipal corporation elections after the municipal council and nagar panchayat elections. In the constituencies where the 50 percent reservation limit has been exceeded in district council elections, the State Election Commission may decide to hold elections for those 17 district councils in the second phase as per the court's directions.
Elections cannot be postponed
The State Election Commission has completed all preparations regarding district council elections. As the next hearing in the Supreme Court is scheduled for January 21, the elections cannot be postponed much further. Therefore, the path is clear for the State Election Commission to hold elections in places where there is no obstacle due to the reservation limit, sources said.
