Sonia Gandhi : Relief for Sonia Gandhi in Voter List Case; Major Order from High Court
The Delhi High Court has extended the deadline for Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to present her case against the petition until February 7. This extension has been granted in the case of allegations that her name was included in the electoral roll before acquiring Indian citizenship. During the hearing on Tuesday, time was requested from the court on behalf of Sonia Gandhi. Subsequently, the court set the date for the next hearing as February 7.
This case is related to the Rouse Avenue District Court in Delhi, where the Vice President of the Central Delhi Bar Association, Adv. Vikas Tripathi, has filed a petition against Sonia Gandhi. According to the allegations made by Tripathi, Sonia Gandhi became a citizen of India in 1983. However, her name was included in the Indian electoral roll before that. This matter is against the law, and the petition claims it violates the Representation of the People Act and citizenship rules.
The petition alleges that having a name on the voter list before obtaining citizenship constitutes fraud and thus violates civil rights. The petitioners have sought action from the court on this issue. The magistrates had previously dismissed this petition. However, against that decision, Advocate Vikas Tripathi has approached the Delhi High Court.
The Delhi High Court had earlier issued a notice to Sonia Gandhi on December 9, directing her to present her case. Accordingly, the hearing took place on Tuesday. However, during the hearing, a request was made on behalf of Sonia Gandhi for more time for complete preparation. The court accepted this request and extended the deadline for the next hearing to February 7.
Meanwhile, this case has also caught the attention of political circles. Since it is related to senior Congress leader and former UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, it is speculated that this case might take on a political hue. In the next hearing, Sonia Gandhi will present her statement, and everyone is keenly watching what the court's next decision will be.
