Mumbai's Traffic Set for Relief as Vakola Bridge Nears Opening

Traffic Relief: Mumbai's Vakola Bridge, South Asia's longest cable-stayed, set to open soon, easing congestion and transforming commutes.

In a major development set to ease traffic congestion in Mumbai, the Vakola Cable-Stayed Bridge—South Asia’s longest of its kind—is now complete and will soon be opened to the public. Constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the bridge promises to transform the commute between Kurla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport into a seamless, signal-free experience.

The bridge, part of the Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension project, passes over the Vakola signal and descends near Panbai International School. This will significantly reduce traffic snarls on the Western Express Highway, especially for vehicles coming from the Kalina area.

A Unique Engineering Marvel

The Vakola Cable Bridge stands out for its distinctive design and engineering. Standing 25 meters tall, the bridge features a 100-meter curved section at a sharp 90-degree turn near Vakola Junction, which is supported by a cable-stayed structure. The main section includes a 215-meter-long orthotropic steel deck, offering strength and flexibility.

The bridge is between 10.5 to 17.2 meters wide and has dual lanes to support high traffic volume. Construction began in 2016 with an initial target completion by 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and technical hurdles delayed progress, increasing the total project cost by approximately ₹650 crore.

Currently, the final touches are being completed, including installation of signage, lighting, painting, and beautification.

Official Statement and Public Expectations

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee recently inspected the bridge and expressed optimism about its opening.

“The bridge will be opened to the public during the monsoon. Beyond easing transportation, it will also serve as a new landmark in Mumbai’s modern architectural landscape,” he stated.

Not only is this bridge a boon for daily commuters, but it’s also poised to become a visual attraction for tourists. With its completion, the travel time between Kurla and the airport will be reduced dramatically, offering a faster, smoother, and signal-free drive.

Key Highlights:
