In Brief

A staggering 90,000 stray dogs in Mumbai city
Information provided by Mumbai Municipal Corporation
The issue of stray dogs has become significant in recent days. The Supreme Court has ordered that stray dogs be removed and sent to shelter homes. In the past few months, many people have been injured in attacks by stray dogs, and some have died. Meanwhile, there are only 8 shelter homes in Mumbai, while the number of stray dogs exceeds 90,000. This has raised the question of how to comply with the Supreme Court's order.
After the Supreme Court ordered the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs and their relocation to shelter homes, it has come to light that officials of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation made this statement. To comply with the Supreme Court's order, more shelter homes will be needed in the city. Orders have been given to immediately place stray dogs from educational institutions, hospitals, bus and railway station areas into special shelter arrangements.
According to a census conducted by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation 11 years ago, there are more than 95,000 stray dogs in Mumbai. Since the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program started in 2014, this number has decreased by 5,000. Currently, there are more than 90,000 stray dogs in the city, and there are only 8 shelter homes with limited capacity for housing dogs.
