New Delhi – The central government has implemented strict regulations to prevent objectionable, misleading, or obscene content in AI-generated (Artificial Intelligence) and deepfake formats. According to the new order, if any objectionable AI-generated text, photo, or video is found on any platform, it is mandatory to remove it within three hours. A warning of strict action has also been issued against social media companies violating the rules.

The Ministry of Information Technology has given clear instructions to all major social media platforms, digital intermediaries, and content hosting companies to immediately remove misleading, defamatory, or socially disruptive content created through deepfakes or AI. This decision was made in light of the increasing incidents of fake videos being created, especially against women and public figures, according to sources.

The government has clarified that deepfake content can tarnish an individual's image, create social instability, and even disrupt the election process. Therefore, digital platforms must exercise 'due diligence' and take immediate action upon receiving a complaint. Failure to remove the relevant content within three hours may result in punitive action under the IT Act.

Additionally, platforms are mandated to provide clear instructions to users, appropriately label AI-generated content, and enhance grievance redressal mechanisms. It is reported that the government will soon announce technical measures and guidelines to detect deepfakes. Experts believe that preventing misuse of AI as its use increases in the digital age is a major responsibility. It is expected that this decision by the government will enhance online safety and protect citizens' privacy.
