Increased Concern for China as Taiwan Strengthens Defense with ‘Tien Kung-4’ Missiles
Many countries around the world are currently significantly increasing their missile systems. Against this backdrop, Taiwan has also announced the large-scale production of the advanced 'Tien Kung-4' missiles. These Surface-to-Air missiles will be in actual production from 2026.
The Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) in Taiwan has developed the 'Tien King-4' system, which is an updated version of the 'Tien King-3'. This system is specifically designed to intercept cruise and ballistic missiles coming from China. Its maximum engagement altitude is approximately 70 kilometers, and it is considered more capable than the PAC-3 and Tien King-3.
According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, the government plans to purchase a total of 122 missile pods. Of these, 46 pods will be delivered in 2026, while the remaining 76 pods will arrive in 2027. Each pod will contain one missile.
This missile has a higher speed and can accurately target even fast-moving and agile targets in the air. It includes active radar guidance and inertial midcourse guidance systems, which provide mid-flight updates. A microwave seeker is installed in the nose section, which searches for the target in the final stage.
This will further strengthen Taiwan's air defense system, and China may feel strategic pressure as a result.
