Wagholi Traffic Woes: Rising Accidents and Jams Spark Public Outrage
Growing traffic congestion and a spike in accidents have triggered anger among residents of Wagholi, a rapidly developing suburb on the Pune-Nagar Highway. Citizens are demanding immediate intervention as heavy vehicles continue to flout traffic regulations, putting daily commuters at risk. The Pune City Transport Department had earlier imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles, allowing six to ten-wheeler trucks to enter city limits only between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, these rules are being blatantly violated, with heavy vehicles frequently seen on the roads during restricted hours.
Locals have reported that many of these trucks are also overloaded, further increasing the risk of accidents. “Despite the regulations, truck operators continue to ignore the rules, and the authorities have failed to ensure proper enforcement,” said a resident of Wagholi. Though traffic police have initiated some actions, residents argue that efforts have been insufficient and sporadic. Frustrated by the ongoing danger and lack of accountability, citizens have warned that they will launch a strong protest if the issue is not addressed promptly.
Assistant Police Inspector Dattatray Lingade responded to the growing concerns, stating, “Strict action will soon be taken against heavy vehicles violating the time restrictions. We will file cases against drivers breaking the rules, and the crackdown will be continuous.” With road safety increasingly compromised, Wagholi residents are calling for stricter enforcement, better traffic management, and accountability from the transport department to prevent further loss of life.
