Monsoon Update: Rain likely to decrease in some regions across the country

There will be less rainfall in the next few days in June, and the intensity of rainfall will decrease in some parts of the country, including Maharashtra.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh update indicating that monsoon activity is expected to intensify in the coming days across various parts of the country. However, certain regions may witness a temporary decrease in rainfall intensity.

Unseasonal rains that began in May have already set new records. The early showers were influenced by multiple weather systems, including low-pressure areas formed in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, as well as western disturbances moving from North to Central India. Additionally, the continuous influx of moisture from both water bodies further fueled widespread pre-monsoon activity across the country, including Maharashtra.

In an unusual development, the southwest monsoon, which traditionally begins in June, had already made an early entry in May this year — reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and parts of Maharashtra. It has since advanced into Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the Northeastern states, Sikkim, West Bengal, and much of South India, marking one of the fastest monsoon progressions in recent years.

Despite the strong onset, the IMD has cautioned that the monsoon flow could pause briefly. A slowdown is expected during the first fortnight of June, potentially delaying consistent rainfall in some areas. This break in intensity is typical during rapid early monsoon phases, meteorologists say.

As of now, Maharashtra has received an average of 172.6 mm of rainfall, while the national average stands at 175.7 mm. Both figures are expected to rise by the end of the month as monsoon activity picks up pace again. Citizens and farmers are advised to stay updated with local weather alerts and plan agricultural and travel activities accordingly.
