What exactly is the Right to Disconnect Bill presented in Parliament?
On Friday, the Right to Disconnect Bill was presented in Parliament by Supriya Sule, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party Sharad Pawar faction, in 2025. It proposes the creation of an Employee Welfare Authority. Every employee will have the right to disconnect from work-related calls and emails after working hours or while on leave, or to not respond to them.
This bill presented in Parliament was introduced as a private member's bill. Because members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (Parliament) are allowed to introduce bills on any subject they feel should be legislated. However, there are exceptions to some cases. Also, most private member's bills are withdrawn after the government responds to the proposed law. The Right to Disconnect Bill, if approved in 2025, will benefit employees who receive work calls and emails after working hours or while on leave.
Along with this, Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya has introduced another bill. The Menstrual Benefits Bill 2024 recommends providing certain facilities to female employees at the workplace during menstruation. DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has introduced a bill to abolish the death penalty in the country. This demand has been made before as well. However, the central government had rejected this demand, stating that the death penalty is necessary in some cases. Meanwhile, independent MP Vishal Patil has introduced a bill related to preventing violence against journalists and providing protection.
