The Indian Railways has made an important decision in view of passenger safety due to the crowd and accidents in Mumbai's local trains. Two non-AC local trains with automatic doors will soon be at the service of Mumbaikars. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that the production of these local rakes is underway at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Considering the experience of increased passenger safety due to closed doors in AC locals, the railways have decided to provide the same facility in non-AC locals now. Members of Parliament from Mumbai had raised questions in the Lok Sabha regarding the increasing crowd and accidents in local trains.
What are the features of the new local?
The new rake will have vestibule connections between compartments with automatic doors. An improved ventilation system will be installed on the roof, and there will be special valves near the doors to maintain airflow. The purpose of this design is to provide some relief to passengers even during peak hours.
Change in old local trains impossible
It is not possible to install automatic doors in the currently running simple local trains. An experiment was conducted to install doors on simple locals at the Kurla car shed of Central Railway. However, this experiment has not received final approval. This decision was made after some passengers fell from a moving train at Mumbra railway station. Four people died in this accident and many were injured. The railway is investigating this incident. To prevent such incidents in the future, the railway will install automatic doors in all new trains being built for the Mumbai suburban section. Additionally, the doors of old trains will also be changed so that they close automatically. This incident occurred in a train heading towards CSMT. Some passengers lost their balance at Mumbra station and fell from the moving train. Preliminary investigation has revealed that approximately 10-15 passengers fell from the train. Central Railway believes that this accident happened due to overcrowding. The railway and police immediately reached the scene after the incident and reviewed the situation. The injured were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
