Indian Railway: Now 1.5 Lakh Tickets to Be Issued Per Minute

In a significant move to enhance passenger convenience and streamline ticket booking operations

In a significant move to enhance passenger convenience and streamline ticket booking operations, the Railway Administration has approved the implementation of a new system that will enable the issuance of 1.5 lakh railway tickets per minute.

This development comes as part of efforts to tackle long-standing challenges faced by passengers, including long queues at ticket counters across railway stations. Most Indian citizens depend heavily on rail services for travel, and the need for a faster, more efficient ticketing process has been a persistent demand.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technology arm of the Ministry of Railways, has developed this sophisticated ticketing system. Currently, the booking infrastructure can handle about 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new system increases this capacity by nearly five times, significantly reducing wait times and easing the burden on railway booking offices.

“This system will save passengers’ valuable time and make the process of obtaining tickets quicker and more convenient,” said officials.

According to railway data, over 850 crore passengers used Indian Railways' services last year. With this new capacity, officials believe the number of passengers could further increase, potentially leading to greater financial gains for the railways.

However, it is important to note that this upgraded system will currently be limited to ticket counters at railway stations. Online passengers will not benefit from this enhancement, as it is not yet integrated into the e-ticketing system.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Mumbai Central, stated:

“After the launch of this system, passengers will get tickets immediately. Also, it will help in curbing ticket brokers, ensuring more transparency and fairness in the booking process.”

As per the Railway Board’s directives, this new system will be implemented nationwide in the coming weeks.
