Budget 2026: Political obstacle on BMC budget; possibility of budget missing in February due to mayoral selection

The upcoming annual budget (2026-27) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is likely to be presented after the legal deadline this year. The changing political situation in the state and the return of new representatives in the corporation have made this delay inevitable. According to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, it is mandatory to present the budget before February 5 every year. Last year, this budget was presented on February 4, but this year, due to the elections of the mayor, deputy mayor, and major statutory committees in the first week of February, it has become difficult to adhere to the timeline.

The municipal administration is preparing to write a letter to the state government's urban development department seeking permission to extend the deadline for budget presentation. This budget, worth thousands of crores, includes significant provisions for infrastructure, health, education, transport, and civic services. This delay is expected to allow the newly elected mayor and committees to make strategic changes according to their priorities. Traditionally, the budget is prepared under the guidance of the new representatives.

Currently, the administrator's rule is ongoing in the municipal corporation, which will end with the special meeting for the election of the new mayor. The mayor's term is two and a half years, and the statutory committee chairperson's term is one year. If elections are held in February, regular elections in April may be canceled. The final decision depends on the state government. If the extension is approved, a new financial plan will be presented by the new leadership for Mumbaikars.

This budget is important for Mumbai's development as it provides funding for mega projects like the Coastal Road and sewage treatment projects. The administration claims that this delay will not affect services for Mumbaikars. The return of public representatives will give new impetus to the decision-making process of the municipal corporation.
