Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi Departs for Pandharpur Today
The spiritual fervor of the Pandharpur Wari has once again gripped Maharashtra, as the palkhi (palanquin) procession of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj sets off today from Alandi on its annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. The procession, deeply rooted in the bhakti tradition, will culminate on July 5, ahead of Ashadhi Ekadashi, which falls on July 6 this year.
As per tradition, the palkhi will depart at 8 PM this evening, since today marks a Thursday, considered highly auspicious in the Warkari sect. The atmosphere in Alandi is charged with devotion as thousands of Warkaris chant “Harinam”, preparing to walk hundreds of kilometers in devotion to Lord Vithoba of Pandharpur.
Every year, lakhs of devotees from across Maharashtra and beyond participate in the Pandharpur Wari, a centuries-old tradition symbolizing faith, unity, and spiritual discipline. More than a thousand dindis — organized groups of Warkaris — are expected to accompany the palkhi this year, traversing through villages and towns with rhythmic abhangas (devotional songs), saffron flags, and disciplined formations.
Despite the monsoon, the Warkaris begin this foot pilgrimage with unwavering faith and enthusiasm. Their journey, filled with devotional singing and communal spirit, represents one of the most significant religious events in Maharashtra’s cultural calendar.
Authorities have made necessary arrangements for crowd management, food, water, and medical facilities along the route to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.
The arrival of the palkhi in Pandharpur will be one of the highlights of the Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrations, marking the spiritual culmination of the Wari.
