Monsoon Havoc: Water Enters Mumbai's Underground Metro Station
With the arrival of the monsoon, Mumbai is witnessing heavy downpours that have caused widespread waterlogging across the city. The relentless rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, has disrupted daily life and affected both road and rail traffic.
Since the early hours of the morning, Mumbai has been lashed by continuous heavy rain, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more intense showers and strong winds over the next four to five hours. As a result, water has accumulated in several low-lying areas, making commuting difficult for thousands of residents.
In a concerning development, Mumbai’s ambitious Metro-3 project (Aqua Line) has also been impacted. Water has entered one of the underground metro stations, reportedly Aqualine station, marking a significant setback for the city’s infrastructure in the very first major rain of the season.
This is the first time waterlogging has been reported inside an underground metro station in Mumbai, raising questions about the city’s monsoon preparedness. Commuters using the metro services in the affected zone are facing major inconveniences, with access points flooded and services likely to be disrupted.
Meanwhile, suburban railway lines have reported delays, and authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through flood-prone zones. Emergency teams have been deployed to manage the situation, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is closely monitoring developments across the city.
