Mumbai's Karnak Bridge Renamed 'Sindoor Bridge'; CM Fadnavis to Inaugurate Tomorrow
The iconic Karnak Bridge at Masjid Bunder in South Mumbai has been officially renamed as ‘Sindoor Bridge’ and is set to be inaugurated tomorrow by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The inauguration ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., marking the end of a decade-long wait for smoother east-west connectivity in the city.
The original 150-year-old bridge was demolished in 2022 due to structural concerns. Since then, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook the reconstruction of the bridge in collaboration with Central Railway, adhering to new design and safety standards.
Despite the completion of the bridge, it remained closed to the public, leading to protests by Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, who demanded its immediate opening.
The new Sindoor Bridge is expected to bring significant relief to motorists and pedestrians, especially in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road areas, which have faced severe traffic congestion for over a decade.
