As heavy rainfall continues to lash several parts of Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kolhapur district today, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the risk of rising water levels across the region.

Earlier, the IMD had issued a yellow alert for multiple districts due to the possibility of rain accompanied by lightning. Now, with rainfall intensifying, the alert for Kolhapur has been escalated to red.

One of the most impacted areas is the Rajaram Dam on the Panchganga River, where the water level has reached 19 feet and 8 inches. In total, 13 dams—located on the Panchganga, Kasari, Dudhganga, and Bhogawati rivers—have gone under water, raising concerns of flooding in nearby areas.

As a result of the rising water levels, traffic movement has been completely halted over the submerged dams. Diversions have been implemented, and commuters are being directed to use alternative routes.

All rivers in Kolhapur district are currently flowing at high velocity, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. The Meteorological Department has urged residents to stay cautious, avoid low-lying areas, and follow official instructions carefully.
