Heavy Rains Cause Panchganga River to Overflow in Kolhapur
Continuous rainfall in Kolhapur city and surrounding areas has led to a rapid rise in the Panchganga River’s water level, which has now reached 29 feet 6 inches, causing widespread concern. The river has overflowed its banks, and multiple dam areas remain submerged, disrupting local transportation.
As many as 19 dams, including the Rajaram dam, are still underwater due to persistent rains. This has resulted in traffic disruptions, with authorities rerouting vehicles via alternative roads to ensure commuter safety.
Despite a temporary pause in rainfall in Kolhapur city, heavy showers continue unabated in the dam catchment areas, further contributing to the rising water levels and sustained submergence.
Compared to the same time last year, the reservoirs are holding significantly more water, prompting authorities to continue water discharge as a precautionary measure. As of today, the Radhanagari reservoir reports 63% water storage capacity, raising alerts for possible further flooding if rains persist.
This situation is particularly alarming considering it is still the early phase of the monsoon, and the Panchganga River has already breached safe limits. Disaster management teams are on standby, and residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant.
