Since the untimely death of the state's late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, political developments in Maharashtra have accelerated. Sunetra Pawar has taken over the leadership of the Nationalist Congress Party and has been sworn in as the state's first female Deputy Chief Minister. Against this backdrop, party MLA Amol Mitkari has demanded that the beloved sister scheme be named after Ajit Pawar. Responding to this demand, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that all demands can be decided upon collectively.

NCP MLA Amol Mitkari recently made this demand to the Chief Minister. Last week, the entire state was in mourning due to the passing of Ajit Pawar. Subsequently, Sunetra Pawar was given full authority of the party. Mitkari said that since 'Ladki Bahin' was part of Ajit Pawar's economic policy, it would be appropriate to include her name. Speaking on this demand, Chief Minister Fadnavis said that many demands are coming regarding the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme. We will make a decision after considering everyone's views.

Meanwhile, due to the beloved sister scheme putting a significant burden on the state's treasury, the government has imposed strict control over expenses. After the demise of Ajit Pawar, Chief Minister Fadnavis, who took over the responsibility of the finance ministry, has issued an important circular to avoid a fiscal deficit by the end of the current financial year (2025-26). According to this, no new purchase proposals will be approved after February 15. Considering that many departments spend a large portion of the budget in the last three months of the financial year, these decisions have been made to maintain cash flow.

This circular clearly states that after February 15, no proposals for furniture, computers, Xerox machines, equipment or spare parts, workshops or seminars, and office rent or repairs will be approved. These measures will provide relief to the treasury by preventing unnecessary expenses. Although the success of the beloved sister scheme is benefiting millions of women, the government has had to impose financial discipline due to the growing fiscal deficit.

These demands and financial decisions have sparked discussions in political circles. The focus is on how the Nationalist Party will move forward under the leadership of Sunetra Pawar and what stance the government's economic policy will take.

Summary
  • Huge demand across the state for the beloved sister scheme; CM Fadnavis indicated consideration of all demands.

  • NCP MLA Amol Mitkari demanded the inclusion of Ajit Pawar's name in the scheme.

  • Circular issued not to approve unnecessary purchase proposals after February 15, considering the financial deficit.

  • Although the scheme benefits millions of women, the government has to maintain financial discipline.
