State Election Commission decides that voter list as on july 1 is eligible for local body elections
(Local Body Elections) With the upcoming municipal corporations, district councils, municipal councils, and other local self-government elections approaching in the state, the Election Commission has accelerated its preparations. State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare has clarified that only citizens whose names are in the voter list until July 1, 2025, will have the right to vote.
Against this backdrop, Waghmare held a review meeting with district officials via video conferencing. The meeting discussed the availability of manpower required for the election, the number of polling stations, the preparation of voting machines, and other important matters.
For the elections of local self-government institutions in the state, a separate voter list is not prepared; instead, the list of the Election Commission of India is used. The list updated until July 1 will be considered final. Since these elections are held in a multi-member manner, more polling stations will be required compared to the assembly elections. For this, the State Election Commission has set criteria and issued separate orders.
Instructions have been given to provide appropriate facilities at polling stations considering the needs of general and disabled voters. Additionally, the technical testing (first-level inspection) of voting machines should be completed promptly to ensure they are operational for the election. Another important aspect is that the location of polling stations, the condition of buildings, facilities, and the requirement and availability of manpower will be reviewed from time to time. If needed, manpower will be made available promptly with the help of the concerned divisional commissioners. Secretary of the State Election Commission, Suresh Kakani, and senior officials were also present for this entire process.
