Weather Update: Monsoon Delay Triggers Heatwave in Maharashtra; Vidarbha May Touch 45°C

The southwest monsoon's arrival in Maharashtra has been delayed by nearly two weeks, and meteorological forecasts now indicate that monsoon-like conditions are unlikely to develop until at least June 15. As a result, several regions of the state, particularly Vidarbha, are bracing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar up to 45°C.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the delay in the monsoon is leading to significantly higher daytime temperatures across key regions including Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Khandesh. In many areas, the mercury has already crossed 40°C, and East Vidarbha is forecast to be the hottest, with temperatures approaching 45°C in the coming days.

Rainfall activity across the state is expected to remain limited until June 14. While most regions will stay dry, isolated pockets — particularly in South Marathwada and parts of South Madhya Maharashtra — may experience light rain and afternoon thundershowers. However, these instances are expected to be scattered and short-lived.

“Normally, the monsoon reaches Vidarbha between June 10 and 15,” said IMD officials. “This year, although the onset began earlier than usual, unfavorable weather patterns have stalled its advancement.”

Experts note that the absence of favorable supporting systems in both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea has prevented the monsoon from progressing inland. Instead, hot, dry winds from the north are dominating the region, driving up temperatures and intensifying heat condit

In light of the ongoing weather conditions, the state agriculture department has issued an advisory urging farmers not to begin sowing operations prematurely. Officials have emphasized that without consistent rainfall, early sowing could lead to seed losses and poor crop germination.

Farmers are advised to wait until monsoon activity becomes more stable and widespread, which is expected after June 15, depending on the development of necessary meteorological conditions.
