The iconic Karnak Bridge located at Masjid Bunder in South Mumbai has been officially renamed as ‘Sindoor Bridge’. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to inaugurate the newly rebuilt bridge today at 10:00 AM, marking a significant milestone for Mumbai’s traffic infrastructure.

The reopening of this crucial East-West connector is expected to provide long-awaited relief to Mumbaikars who have endured persistent traffic congestion in the area for nearly a decade.

Originally constructed over 150 years ago, the Karnak Bridge was a vital link in Mumbai's traffic network. However, in 2022, the bridge was demolished due to structural concerns. The reconstruction project was undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) based on plans laid out by Central Railway authorities.

Despite the completion of the reconstruction, the bridge remained closed to vehicular movement, sparking protests from political workers affiliated with Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who demanded its immediate opening.

Today’s inauguration will be attended by several high-profile dignitaries including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, and Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, alongside Chief Minister Fadnavis.

The new Sindoor Bridge holds major significance for both motorists and pedestrians. It serves as a key transit route in South Mumbai, enhancing connectivity between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road.
