Mumbai's Dabbawalas Announce Price Hike: Tiffin Service Now ₹1,400 Per Month
In a move that will impact thousands of office-goers and residents across the city, Mumbai's iconic dabbawalas have announced a ₹200 price hike in their tiffin delivery service. The revised rates come into effect from this month, citing rising inflation, increased transport fares, and fuel costs as key reasons behind the decision.
The famed dabbawala service, jointly operated by the Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association and the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust, has been delivering home-cooked meals across Mumbai and its suburbs since 1890. Known for their efficiency and reliability, the dabbawalas are now grappling with financial pressure due to increased railway and road transport expenses.
“The burden of inflation and fuel price hikes has become difficult to manage. Therefore, we have decided to raise the monthly fare by ₹200 per tiffin coach,” said Ulhas Muke, president of the association.
Under the revised pricing:
Customers will now pay ₹1,400 per month for tiffin delivery within a five-kilometre radius.
For distances exceeding five kilometres, additional charges will apply based on the distance and delivery logistics.
