Mahavitaran Seeks License to Join Mumbai's Electricity Providers
In a significant development for Mumbai’s power consumers, Mahavitaran (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited) has filed a formal petition seeking a license to supply electricity in Mumbai, potentially becoming the fourth major electricity provider in the city.
Currently, Mumbai residents receive power from BEST, Adani Electricity, and Tata Power. If approved, Mahavitaran’s entry would offer Mumbaikars an additional choice, creating a more competitive electricity market in the city.
According to reports, Mahavitaran has submitted its application to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). The regulatory body will consider the petition after conducting a hearing and reviewing public objections, following standard procedures.
Proposed Supply Areas Across Mumbai
Mahavitaran has proposed to distribute electricity across a wide range of areas, including:
Colaba to Mahim
Bandra to Dahisar (Western Suburbs)
Vikhroli to Chunabhatti and Mankhurd (Eastern Suburbs)
Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation area
Chena and Kajupada
If the license is granted, Mahavitaran could pose direct competition to existing suppliers in both residential and commercial segments, potentially influencing tariff rates and service improvements.
As of now, the decision rests with the MERC. The outcome of the hearing and public feedback will determine whether Mahavitaran secures the necessary license to operate in Mumbai’s competitive electricity distribution landscape.
