It is reported that the Mumbai Corporation has withheld MHADA's 130 crore rupees. The corporation has not paid the surcharge amount to MHADA. It is understood that the corporation has not paid the surcharge amount to MHADA for the past thirteen years.
The municipal corporation collects a cess from the owners and tenants of buildings, out of which 10 crore rupees are given to the corporation every year. However, since 2012, due to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation defaulting on a whopping 130 crore rupees of MHADA's cess, there is a reported shortage of funds for the protective repairs and reconstruction work of cess-receiving buildings.
