ST Bus Cancelled: Travel without food and water for 22 hours; Passengers troubled due to Mumbai-Pune Expressway jam and cancellation of all ST buses
On the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near the Adoshi tunnel, traffic has been completely halted for more than 22 hours since a propylene gas tanker overturned at 5 PM on Tuesday evening. Due to the gas leak, vehicles have been stopped in both directions for safety reasons, resulting in a 20-kilometer-long jam. Hundreds of vehicles, passengers, and ST buses are stranded. Passengers deprived of food and water are facing severe hardships, while the State Transport Corporation has made a major decision to cancel all buses going from Pune to Mumbai.
Although efforts to stop the gas leak after the accident are ongoing, the administration has failed to remove the tanker. Traffic remained disrupted overnight in the Khandala Ghat section, and even after 12 hours, the situation has not returned to normal. Thousands of passengers, including women and children, are stranded and have been deprived of food, water, and toilet facilities. Many ST buses are also stuck in the jam, causing inconvenience to passengers. Due to this situation, the connection from Mumbai-Raigad-Navi Mumbai-Pune on this 94.5-kilometer long six-lane toll expressway, one of the busiest in Maharashtra, has been completely disrupted.
According to the decision taken by the ST Corporation, all bus services from Pune to Mumbai have been temporarily canceled. This will inconvenience millions of passengers and put pressure on alternative routes. The highway traffic police and control room have appealed to avoid traveling on the expressway until normal traffic is restored. There is anger expressed towards the government for not starting a helpline and not providing assistance. The old Mumbai-Pune highway (NH-48) is also jammed, and travel via Tamhini, Malshej Ghat is being recommended as an alternative.
This is the first time such a situation has arisen on this highway, which is India's first six-lane expressway. There is an increasing demand for speeding up operations at the accident site, and there is uncertainty about when relief will be provided to passengers.
