Mumbai Water Crisis Looms as Dam Levels Drop to 18%

As temperatures soar across the city, concerns over water scarcity are mounting. The oppressive heat has left citizens anxious, with several areas already experiencing water cuts and increased reliance on tanker supply. The situation has become particularly alarming in pockets of the city where water supply has been reduced significantly—or in some cases, halted altogether.

Amid this growing concern, only 18% of usable water remains in the dams that supply Mumbai. These seven key dams, which provide drinking water to millions of residents, are witnessing rapidly declining levels.

Despite this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm. Municipal officials have stated that the existing reserves are expected to last until July. Additionally, water has been allocated to meet the state government’s quota, indicating that supplies are being managed strategically for the time being.

However, if the monsoon is delayed, the city could face a significant water crisis in the coming months. Authorities are urging residents to use water judiciously as they continue to monitor the situation closely.
