Mumbai Water Metro: A New Transportation Option for Mumbaikars; Work to Begin Soon
Relief may soon be on the way for Mumbaikars weary of daily traffic congestion, as the state government prepares to launch an ambitious Water Metro project aimed at providing an alternative mode of urban transport. The announcement was made by Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, who confirmed that preliminary work on the project is set to begin shortly.
A detailed plan for the Water Metro will be presented within the next three months, and the implementation responsibility has been entrusted to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). A presentation on the project was held on Monday in the presence of key officials, including Maharashtra Maritime Board CEO P. Pradeep, KMRL representatives, and senior departmental staff.
The Water Metro is expected to operate on major coastal routes including Bandra, Worli, Versova, South Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai. Minister Rane emphasized that the project will play a vital role in connecting North Mumbai to South Mumbai, as well as linking Navi Mumbai with the city center via water transport.
Importantly, the ticket prices for the Water Metro will be kept affordable, making the service accessible to the general public. The new transport system is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease the burden on road and rail traffic.
The concept of a Water Metro was discussed in a recent high-level meeting at Mantralaya, where officials expressed strong support for the proposal. Following a positive review, Minister Rane issued directives to commence work on the Water Metro at the earliest.
If all goes as planned, the Water Metro will be launched for public use by 2026, offering Mumbaikars a faster, cleaner, and more efficient way to navigate the city’s coastline.
