Maharashtra Politics: Defeat in Municipal Elections, NCP Factions Decide to Unite
Scroll down to read the brief news...
The BJP and the grand alliance had a strong presence in the elections of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The BJP emerged as the largest party in most corporations, and the grand alliance came to power in important corporations like Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan-Dombivli. In the two private municipal corporations of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP also made significant gains, defeating both factions of the Nationalist Congress. This defeat has increased the likelihood of major developments within the Nationalist Congress, and the Sharad Pawar faction is expected to make important decisions soon.
In this election, both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party, led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar, campaigned vigorously. Both groups came together to win Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Supriya Sule, a Member of Parliament from Sharad Pawar's party, campaigned with the clock symbol of Ajit Pawar's faction. However, the expected success was not achieved. In the 2017 election, the Nationalist Congress Party won 39 seats in Pune, but this time Ajit Pawar's faction secured only 27 seats. Sharad Pawar's faction managed to win only three seats. In total, Sharad Pawar's faction could not even open an account in 18 municipal corporations.
This failure has accelerated movements between both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party. Shashikant Shinde, the state president of Sharad Pawar's NCP, has made an important statement, announcing that the upcoming district council and panchayat committee elections will be contested together by both factions. Voting for these elections will take place on February 5, and the results will be announced on February 7. If this unification occurs in the current political situation, it will have a significant impact on future elections.
Although the municipal corporation results have increased the weight of the BJP-Mahayuti, the internal friction within the NCP may come to an end. It will be interesting to see what exactly unfolds in the future.
• Failure of NCP factions in municipal elections
• Decision for Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar factions to come together
• Both factions to contest upcoming district council and panchayat committee elections
• Despite the growing influence of BJP-Mahayuti, the unification within NCP is important
