Major power outage at Pune's Hinjewadi
A major power outage has severely affected operations in Pune’s Hinjawadi IT Park, home to several large IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies. The disruption, caused by a fault in a high-voltage underground power line, has left around 52,000 consumers and nearly 70 to 90 companies without power for the past two days.
According to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the fault occurred on Sunday afternoon in the 220 kV Infosys-Pegasus cable near the Hinjawadi Phase-2 Metro Station. The breakdown led to a blackout in several parts of the Pune Rural and Ganeshkhind divisions.
Mahavitaran officials have managed to restore supply to most low-voltage consumers through alternative arrangements. However, power restoration for high-voltage industrial users, including IT firms, is still ongoing. Officials estimate that full restoration will be completed by Wednesday morning.
The outage has also impacted residential societies in the area. According to local residents' associations, backup generators in several housing complexes have failed, affecting essential services like water supply and elevators.
The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) has urged affected companies to allow employees to work from home until power is fully restored. Many firms have reported significant disruptions to their operations and productivity due to the outage.
Raising the issue in the public domain, Member of Parliament Supriya Sule criticized the state government for inadequate infrastructure planning in key industrial zones. “Power cuts in critical areas like the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park result in substantial losses for the industry. The government must implement permanent solutions, including alternative power systems, to prevent such incidents in the future,” Sule said.
