The Maharashtra State Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the Koyna Dam Base Power House Project, also known as the Piatha Power House, with a substantial financial provision of ₹862 crore 29 lakh.

The project is part of the state's broader efforts to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure. It will be constructed at the base of the Koyna Dam, and is expected to generate 80 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The power generation facility will be established on the left bank of the dam, utilizing the hydro potential of the region.

The Koyna Dam, already a major source of hydroelectric power for Maharashtra, will see further enhancement through this new base power plant.

To implement this project, an agreement has been signed with the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) and the Mahanirmithi Company (Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd.).

The project is designed not only for power generation but also to support regional irrigation schemes. After the electricity is generated, approximately 20 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water will be released for the Tembhu and Krishna-Koyna Upsa Irrigation Scheme (Takari-Mhaisal), thereby benefiting thousands of farmers in the region.
