The proposed international airport project in Purandar taluka has received a major boost, with the partnership structure being finalized. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has been allocated the highest share of 51%, while the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have each been allocated 15% shares. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has been given a 19% share.
Approximately 6,000 crore rupees are required for land acquisition work for this project, and this amount will be made available in the form of a loan. The state government's cabinet has recently approved this loan proposal, and instructions have been given to complete the land acquisition process by June 2026. It is expected that this decision will accelerate the project, which has been stalled for many years.
The Purandar airport will give a new direction to the development of Pune and Western Maharashtra. It will provide a significant boost to logistics, MSME industries, agricultural exports, and the tourism sector, while increased international connectivity will encourage foreign investment. This airport, to be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Bhosale, will become the second major air route in Maharashtra after Navi Mumbai airport.
