Complaints have increased that some private schools in the state are charging excessive and illegal fees under various names, financially exploiting students. Considering this situation, the education department will soon amend the relevant law, and preparations are underway to bring effective control over fee hikes.

Education Minister Dada Bhuse provided information on this matter in the Legislative Assembly. He stated that according to the Maharashtra Educational Institutions Fee Regulation Act, no school can charge parents more than the approved fees. For this, it is necessary to have an executive committee of the Parent-Teacher Association in schools, and this committee has the authority to decide on fee increases. However, due to some shortcomings in the current provisions, amendments have become necessary.

Many schools charge additional fees under various categories such as 'building fund', 'laboratory expenses', 'trips', 'library fees'. Amendments will be made to the law to consolidate such fee increases. The education minister clarified that education is not a business but a social commitment, and the government opposes charging more than necessary.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that some colleges have directly contracted with private coaching centers under the name of 'integrated' courses. Bhuse also mentioned that preparations are underway to create a 'Private Coaching Act' to prevent misuse of the education system. The draft of this act is being prepared, and the formulation of rules is also in progress.

Additionally, action will be taken against schools that force students to purchase uniforms, notebooks, books, and school supplies from specific stores. Guidelines are being prepared to allow parents to purchase school supplies from anywhere at their convenience. The education minister has clearly stated that if a complaint is received against schools enforcing such compulsion, an immediate inquiry will be conducted and necessary action will be taken.
