69% of Public Toilets Lack Water and Electricity; What is the report of Praja Foundation?
A recent report by Praja Foundation has exposed the alarming state of public sanitation in Mumbai, revealing that 69% of the city’s public toilets lack both water supply and electricity. The findings highlight a critical failure in basic civic infrastructure across the metropolis.
The report, titled "Current Status of Urban Problems in Mumbai 2025", outlines the dire condition of sanitation facilities and rising levels of coastal water pollution. According to the data, public toilets—especially those meant for women—are insufficient and in deplorable condition.
The report also sheds light on gender disparities in toilet access. While 86 men reportedly use public toilets, the number drops to 81 for women, indicating inadequate provisions for female users in a city with a population of over 20 million.
In addition to the sanitation crisis, the report notes a disturbing increase in coastal water pollution levels, which further jeopardizes public health and environmental safety.
Responding to these concerns, Praja Foundation CEO Milind Mhaske urged the municipal authorities to act swiftly. “Citizen complaints must be addressed in a time-bound manner to ensure access to essential services like sanitation,” he emphasized.
The report has sparked renewed calls for immediate action from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to upgrade public toilet facilities and improve civic infrastructure, particularly in slum areas and densely populated wards.
