In a significant step to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), the Maharashtra government has announced a complete toll waiver for EVs on major highways, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, and the Atal Setu (Sewri–Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link).

The policy, aimed at encouraging the use of clean and sustainable transportation, was formally approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on April 29. However, its implementation was delayed due to the pending issuance of a Government Resolution (GR). The GR was officially released on Friday, marking the commencement of the scheme.

As per the newly issued GR, electric cars and buses will now be exempted from paying tolls on all major state and national highways, including the Mumbai Express Highway. The decision was made by a steering committee led by the Chief Secretary, and the policy will remain in effect until 2030.

EV Infrastructure Push Across Maharashtra

To support the anticipated rise in EV usage, the government has also laid out a comprehensive infrastructure plan:

  • EV charging stations will be established every 25 km along all state and national highways.

  • All petrol pumps across the state will be required to install at least one EV charging facility.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and the Transport Department to ensure timely implementation.

Additionally, fast-charging stations will be installed at all State Transport (ST) bus depots and stations, facilitating wider access to charging for public transport EVs.

Incentives and Funding for EV Purchases

To further drive EV adoption, the Maharashtra government has approved financial incentives for vehicle buyers:

  • ₹10,000 subsidy for electric two-wheelers

  • ₹30,000 for electric three-wheelers

  • ₹1.5 lakh for electric four-wheelers

A dedicated budget of ₹1,993 crore has been sanctioned for the implementation of the EV policy over the next five years.
