As part of a major announcement in the Union Budget 2026 aimed at giving a fast and modern shape to India's transportation system, seven high-speed railway corridors have been announced. This announcement was made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and major cities in the country will be connected by high-speed railways. The first and most important of these seven corridors will be from Mumbai to Pune. The fourth corridor will be constructed between Hyderabad and Chennai, facilitating trade and travel in South India. The fifth corridor will be from Chennai to Bengaluru, which will give high-speed status to this route already under discussion for fast trains. The sixth corridor will connect the country's capital Delhi to the holy city of Varanasi, accelerating religious tourism and economic activities in North India. The seventh and final corridor will be from Varanasi to Siliguri, becoming an important route connecting the eastern region.
These corridors will be historic in terms of the modernization of Indian Railways. It will benefit millions of passengers and strengthen the unity of the country. The government has made special funding provisions for these projects, and construction is likely to begin soon.
