A preliminary investigation has begun to explore the feasibility of diverting water from the Koyna Dam to Mumbai, according to officials from the Irrigation Department. The proposal is currently in its early stages, with an emphasis on technical assessments and route planning.

Presently, water from the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is released from the Kolkewadi Dam into the Vashishthi River, eventually flowing into the Arabian Sea. Authorities are now considering channeling this water toward Mumbai, instead of letting it drain into the sea — a move that could significantly boost the city's water supply.

To support this plan, a 160-kilometer-long water channel is being proposed. An aerial survey for the project has already been conducted by Vascom Company, with a reported cost of approximately ₹38 crore.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed between WAPCOS Limited, New Delhi, and the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation to advance the technical and logistical planning of the project.

In a recent development, the Kolad Irrigation Department has formally notified the Kalambaste Gram Panchayat of the ongoing processes through an official letter, as confirmed by the village Sarpanch.
