Asia Cup 2025: Indian Government Grants Permission to Pakistan Hockey Team to Participate

India gives green light to Pakistan's participation in Asia Cup

The Indian government has granted official permission to the Pakistan hockey team to participate in the Asia Cup Hockey Tournament, scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7, 2025. Sources from the Sports Ministry confirmed that clearances have been received from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Sports Ministry.

Despite the ongoing freeze in bilateral sporting ties between India and Pakistan, the Indian government continues to follow an open and inclusive approach when it comes to multinational sporting events. Officials emphasized that under the Olympic Charter, no country should be barred from participating in international competitions based solely on political differences.

In line with this policy, there was no objection raised to Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup. Additionally, India is set to host the Hockey Junior World Cup in Chennai and Madurai during November–December 2025.

Hockey India Responds

Reacting to the decision, Hockey India issued a statement saying,

“We welcome the government's decision and will work in accordance with the directions given.”

Cricket Asia Cup Still Under Review

Interestingly, India and Pakistan are also placed in the same group for the upcoming Cricket Asia Cup. However, no official request for clearance has yet been received from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Ministry sources said that a decision regarding the cricket tournament will be taken separately after receiving a formal proposal.

The Indian government’s move signals a balanced diplomatic approach—maintaining a firm stance on bilateral sporting engagements while supporting the spirit of international sportsmanship.
