Punjab Kings Set Unwanted Record in Thrilling IPL Clash with RCB
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered a humiliating defeat in their IPL 2025 playoff match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Maharaja Yadvinder Singh International Cricket Stadium, recording an unwanted piece of IPL history. In a one-sided encounter, PBKS were bundled out for just 101 runs, making it the lowest total ever recorded in the shortest number of overs in an IPL playoff match. RCB comfortably chased the target, securing a spot in the final of IPL 2025. This marks RCB’s fourth appearance in the IPL final, having reached three consecutive finals previously.
Punjab’s batting performance was dismal from the start. While Marcus Stoinis top-scored with 26 runs, Azmatullah Omarzai and Prabhsimran Singh contributed 18 runs each. The rest of the lineup faltered quickly — Nehal Wadhera scored 8, Priyansh Arya 7, Josh Inglis 4, and Shreyas Iyer managed just 2 runs before returning to the pavilion. The collapse underscored the failure of PBKS's star-studded batting lineup under pressure. With this, PBKS surpassed the previous record for the fewest overs batted in an IPL playoff match — a dubious milestone. The previous lowest playoff totals were:
Delhi Capitals (2008): Bowled out for 87 runs against Rajasthan Royals.
Deccan Chargers (2010): Managed only 104 runs against Chennai Super Kings.
Punjab's 101-run total has now broken a 17-year-old record, adding to the franchise’s legacy of underwhelming performances in crucial matches. On the other hand, RCB’s dominant performance reaffirms their strong playoff form this season. With a well-balanced squad and momentum on their side, they will look to finally clinch their maiden IPL title in the upcoming final.
