Sunil Gavaskar Urges Indian Fans: Call It 'Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy'
Anderson Tendulkar Trophy: The Test series between India and England has now been renamed 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy', in honour of the contributions of England fast bowler James Anderson and India's legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar. However, former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has objected to the new name.
Gavaskar has said that the trophy should be named 'Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy'. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has the right to name it, but it may seem unfair to Indian fans to see Anderson's name before Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar is 12 years older than Anderson and has made historic achievements in Test and ODI cricket. He has scored the most runs and centuries and also won the 2011 World Cup.
"Although Anderson is the top bowler in Test cricket, his overseas record and contribution in ODI cricket is not as good as Tendulkar's. Anderson is third in the list of wicket-takers in Test cricket and his record in ODI cricket is not as good as Tendulkar's. Along with this, he has asked Indian fans to call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy."
Earlier, the series in England was known as the 'Pataudi Trophy', while the matches in India were played under the 'Anthony de Mello Trophy'. Now, the cricket boards of both the countries have jointly started this unified trophy.
