Bengaluru Stampede During RCB Victory Parade: 11 Dead, Compensation Raised to ₹25 Lakh for Kin
What should have been a day of jubilation turned into a tragic memory for many fans of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Following RCB's historic Indian Premier League (IPL) win — their first in 17 years — a celebratory victory procession at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium turned deadly, claiming the lives of 11 people and injuring over 60. The team’s long-awaited triumph came after reaching the IPL finals three times in the past without securing the title. Star cricketer Virat Kohli, who has been a pillar of the team since his teenage years, finally got his hands on the coveted trophy — a moment 18 years in the making.
However, the festivities took a tragic turn. During the grand victory procession at the stadium, an uncontrollable crowd surge led to a stampede. Eyewitnesses reported fans climbing trees and barricades outside the venue in a desperate bid to catch a glimpse of their heroes. The chaotic scenes soon spiraled into panic. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that 60 individuals sustained injuries in the incident. Emergency response teams swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. The tragic event cast a shadow over RCB’s landmark achievement, and social media soon saw waves of criticism and trolling directed at both the team and captain Kohli for alleged mismanagement of the public gathering.
In response to the tragedy, the Karnataka government has revised the compensation for the families of the deceased. Initially set at ₹10 lakh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the amount would now be increased to ₹25 lakh per family. “We mourn the loss of innocent lives and are committed to supporting the families affected by this heartbreaking incident,” the Chief Minister stated. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the stampede, with growing calls for stricter crowd control measures at public events of such magnitude.
