Court Strikes Balance: POP Idols Approved with Eco-Friendly Measures

With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Bombay High Court has delivered a landmark verdict, offering significant relief to sculptors across Maharashtra. The court has allowed the production of Ganesh idols using Plaster of Paris (POP), a decision expected to revive the livelihood of thousands of idol makers while still emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.

In its ruling, the High Court stated that POP idols can be legally manufactured and that their immersion will be permitted in designated public water bodies. Additionally, the court directed the state government to construct alternative immersion ponds at both urban and rural levels to minimize environmental harm.

This move seeks to strike a balance between preserving cultural traditions and protecting natural ecosystems. Over the past few years, restrictions on POP idols had severely impacted artisans who depend on idol-making as their primary source of income.

“This is a huge relief,” said a sculptor in Mumbai. “POP idols are lighter, more detailed, and artistically superior compared to traditional Shadu clay idols. While environmentalists favor Shadu idols for being eco-friendly, the court’s balanced approach now ensures justice for sculptors and devotees alike.”

The court’s decision has been widely welcomed by idol makers and devotees, who had been struggling with the uncertainty surrounding POP idol production. At the same time, the order reinforces the need for eco-conscious immersion practices, ensuring that cultural celebration does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.

By allowing POP idols while mandating organized immersion in public ponds, the Bombay High Court has attempted to honor both tradition and sustainability in equal measure.
