CJI Bhushan Gavai Pays Tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar
As part of his visit, Chief Justice Gavai paid homage at the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial located at Chaityabhoomi, Dadar. Speaking on the occasion, he said,
"Today is my first visit to Maharashtra after becoming the Chief Justice of the country, and I have come to Chaityabhoomi, where Babasaheb’s memorial stands, to pay my respects. I am here to seek Babasaheb’s blessings to carry forward and preserve the values of freedom, equality, fraternity, and unity as enshrined in the Constitution he gave us."
The Chief Justice's deep reverence for Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, resonated strongly during the visit, drawing praise from legal and civil society representatives alike.
Later, the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa organized a special felicitation ceremony to honor Justice Gavai's historic elevation to the position of Chief Justice of India. During the event, his mother, Kamalatai Gavai, became visibly emotional, her eyes welling up with pride and joy — a poignant moment that captured the hearts of those in attendance.
Justice Bhushan Gavai is the first Dalit Chief Justice of India in over a decade, and only the third in the country's history, following in the footsteps of Justices K.G. Balakrishnan and A.V. Ramakrishnan. His rise to the apex of the judiciary has been widely celebrated as a milestone in India’s pursuit of social justice and equality.
