Although technology has brought the world closer, the web of cybercrime is also becoming tighter. Especially, people trapped in poverty and difficulties are more likely to fall into this trap. A shocking incident has come to light in Dahisar, where a person in financial distress was defrauded of a whopping 2.95 lakh under the lure of selling a kidney.

Prashant Nagvekar, a 45-year-old resident of a slum rehabilitation building in Dahisar, lives with his family in a small flat. To support his wife, son, mother, and brother, Prashant works as an office boy in a private company in Andheri. His monthly salary is only 15,000 rupees, most of which is spent on rent and expenses.

For the past few months, frustrated by financial difficulties, Prashant felt he needed to do something big for his son's education and his own home. Instead of taking a loan, he considered selling a kidney and started searching for information about it on the internet.

Meanwhile, on the dark web, they saw a mobile number advertised under the name of a hospital in Delhi and contacted it. Initially, they were taken into confidence and their personal information was collected. Within a few days, they were contacted again via WhatsApp call. The caller tempted them with an offer of 10 million rupees in exchange for a kidney, but imposed a condition to pay 295,000 rupees for pre-surgery tests.

Since Prashant did not have such an amount, he took a loan through digital loan apps and deposited this amount into three different bank accounts. However, after depositing the money, the fraudsters demanded an additional 130,000 rupees. At that point, Prashant became suspicious and refused to pay. When he tried to contact again, the number was found to be disconnected.

Finally, realizing he had been cheated, Prashant rushed to Dahisar police station and filed a complaint. The police have registered a case and started an investigation.

This incident is a serious example of how individuals caught in poverty and mental distress easily fall into the trap of cyber fraudsters. The police are urging citizens not to fall prey to such temptations and to follow official channels.
