Delhi-NCR Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Heatwave Persists, Rain Likely on June 13–14
The national capital is bracing for an intense heatwave this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting maximum temperatures between 44°C and 45°C over the next few days. Delhi woke up on Monday to a sweltering morning, recording a minimum temperature of 27.6°C, coupled with humidity levels around 48%, making conditions hot and uncomfortable.
On Sunday, the mercury soared to 42.1°C — the highest temperature recorded so far in June. Although strong surface winds are expected during the day, the IMD does not anticipate any significant relief from the scorching heat.
Yellow Alert Issued
In its latest advisory, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning residents of “hot and humid” conditions expected to persist for at least the next four days. The alert urges caution, especially for vulnerable populations including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Air Quality Deteriorates
Adding to the city’s discomfort, Delhi’s air quality also worsened. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 219 on Monday morning, placing it in the “poor” category. AQI levels between 201 and 300 can cause respiratory discomfort, particularly for sensitive groups.
Rain Forecast for North India
Relief from the extreme heat may come mid-week. According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) is expected in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh on June 13 and 14.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh may receive scattered showers between June 11 and 14, and Punjab is likely to experience rain on June 14. Although the showers are expected to be patchy, they may offer temporary respite from the high temperatures and help slightly improve air quality.
Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and remain alert for thunderstorm-related warnings, particularly on days when gusty winds are forecast.
