As the monsoon ushers in a spike in vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya, the Maharashtra state government has reiterated its directive to cap the cost of the ELISA test for dengue at ₹600. The cap, originally implemented in 2016, aims to ensure affordable testing during the seasonal surge in infections.

The move follows complaints that some private laboratories and hospitals are charging between ₹800 to ₹1,100 for the test—well above the government-mandated rate—discouraging patients from getting timely diagnoses.

In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a stern warning, urging citizens to report any violation of the pricing rule. Residents can file complaints by emailing health@punecorporation.org or calling 020-25501215.

Dr. Sandeep Sangle, Joint Director, Health Services, Maharashtra, emphasized that only ELISA tests—specifically the NS1 ELISA and MAC ELISA—are permitted for dengue diagnosis in private hospitals and laboratories. The use of rapid test kits has been strictly prohibited due to reliability concerns.

“All private medical facilities must adhere to the ₹600 limit. Any deviation will invite strict action,” said Dr. Sangle.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also weighed in, stating that while most doctors are complying with the guidelines, a few exceptions remain, which need to be addressed immediately.

PMC health officials confirmed that official instructions have been issued to all registered private hospitals and labs regarding compliance with the pricing and testing norms.

As dengue cases begin to rise with the onset of the rainy season, the government’s move seeks to ensure affordable healthcare access and curb potential outbreaks through early and accurate diagnosis.
